Banana snack industry goes stale

Not so long ago, the Central Java town of Majenang was famous for being the home of sale pisang, a unique snack made with bananas, but recently the market changed and the local snack industry faded to a fraction of its former success. Majenang, one of 23 districts in Cilacap regency in the far west of the province - bordering with Banjar and Ciamis regencies in West Java - has about 30 small factories producing the snack. Before the 1998 economic crisis, there were around 100 such producers, leading Cilacap administration to come up with the idea of making the snack the icon of Majenang. But with the crisis, the plan hit snags and many cottage industries were forced out of business. More than a decade later, the situation has yet to improve. "Before the crisis I could sell 2 or 3 tons of fried banana sweets to Jakarta. But things are difficult now," Yayat, a 61-year-old sale pisang business owner, told The Jakarta Post in Majenang. Today, Yayat produces only about 200 kilograms of sale pisang a month, and 99 percent of this is sold in Majenang. The snacks are sold in 250-gram packages, each costing around Rp 25,000 (US$2). Another snack producer, Juremi, said that before the crisis she could send 2 tons of sale pisang to Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya each month. "Now we only sell sale pisang for the local market," the 60-year-old said. Juremi said most of the snack producers were struggling to survive. "What's important is that business survives. If there are buyers in the city, that's enough. Sometimes we get an order from outside the city, but this is unreliable," she said. "Once, a distributor from outside the city wanted to place an order, but the price he offered was too low to cover our production costs. Rather than suffering losses, we preferred not to take it." Making sale pisang does not take long. Ripe bananas are cut into slices and dried in the sun. "If the sun is bright, the bananas will dry out in two days. But in a rainy season like this, it takes about four days," Juremi said. The dried bananas are then smeared with flour and deep-fried. After being drained, the banana chips are ready to be packaged and sold. The sale pisang business has supported many, including farmers and traders who sell raw bananas to cottage industries in Majenang, as well as banana snack makers such as Juremi and Yayat, and the vendors. Majenang district head, Heru Susedyo, said he was aware of the stagnant business situation. "Sale pisang was once so popular that the Cilacap administration planned to make it the icon of Majenang city, but the plan could not be realized because sales keep decreasing." http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2009/03/06/

banana slug

During pregnancy, your baby is like a parasite and will take all the nutrients it needs from you. If your diet is sufficient in nutrients for both, it does not cause any problems. If on the other hand your diet is inadequate for both, then your recovery after the birth will take longer and if you do not replenish your body stores during childbirth, you may remain weak for a long time. This is probably why our elders make such a lot of fuss about eating well during the period of incarceration.

Wherever you are in the world, everyone will try and say what they eat and how you can eat it. The most important thing to do is follow their own body's needs. Whatever you eat, not be sure that you have a good balance of protein, vitamins, minerals, fat, carbohydrate and water at all meals.

Just remember the following:

1. If you are breastfeeding what you eat will be transferred to your baby through breast milk, so it is important that you eat a balanced diet, so that your baby will have the right nutrients for growth and development.

2. Some foods do not cause the baby to become "windy 'or have loose stools. If you find that your baby is suddenly very upset, try and think about what you ate during the last 12 hours. Avoid that food for a few days and try again. If it happens again, then you should avoid that particular food for a while and then re-enter it into your diet, taking a lick and see how the baby reacts slowly, then increase the amount for which the baby is you get used food.

3. You may find that your appetite is reduced slightly, especially during the first week. This is normal for your body is to readjust your non-pregnant state both physically and mentally, so it is better to have frequent small meals instead of the usual 3 large meals a day.

4. You need to drink plenty of fluids to make breast milk sufficient and that you are prohibited from drinking water, you can get the quantity of liquid from other sources, such as soup.

So what should you eat?

Most Eastern cultures believe that your body is cold after delivery, so you must avoid chilling or cold food, but eat a lot of yang or 'heaty "food for the body heat up. However, if you are normally a yang person, eating too much "heaty" food can cause rashes and fever. In this case, it would be better to reduce the amount of 'heaty food of the most neutral and eat food. If you are a person normally Yin, you should not have any problems eating 'heaty' food (lucky devils). The following table gives you a quick review of the types of foods to eat or avoid.

Types of foods to avoid

"Cooling foods", such as bananas, cabbage, cucumber, coconut and Chinese cabbage Contribute to the mother's poor blood circulation and stomach pain in the baby if you are breast-feeding. Salt as a condiment and spicy foods in general are being rejected Also, in the belief that the use of breast milk reduces production

"Acid Food", for example: pineapple, mango, lemon, lime contribute to excessive lochia in the mother and diarrhea in babies.

Too much 'Heaty foods ", such as chilli, pepper, spices, stress, alcohol and drugs. Contribute to diarrhea in the infant and maternal headaches

'Windy food ", for example, jackfruit, cassava, pumpkin, onion. Contributing to being colicky baby and can cause indigestion for mother and baby.

Poisonous, as the food shrimp, shellfish, crabs, eel, ginger delay healing of the wound and the mother, can cause allergies and eczema in babies. These foods can cause stomach upsets and vomiting

Type of food recommended

To improve milk production

Chicken, squid, clams (small varieties), fish (mainly carp), millet, mutton, pork, rice wine, sea slug, soy milk powder mixed with nuts, cakes of wheat, wheat, pasta with eggs, green papaya

To provide strength to the mother so that she recovers quickly from the effort of labor. Chicken, frog, Panax ginseng, licorice extract and razor clam

What you eat also depends on what you believe and where cooks for you. Where is your mother or MIL you may not have many options. I have seen women themselves and not talk with each other over this issue. Try and work out a compromise acceptable to both parties. Use a logical and persuasive approach instead of confrontation.
